Why Iron Works on the South Plains
A solid fence fights the wind. An iron fence lets it pass, so there's far less load on the posts during a 50 mph spring front. That makes ornamental metal the natural choice wherever you want security without a wall.
- Front yards and entries where a 4 ft fence frames the house without hiding the brick.
- Pool barriers that keep the water visible and meet Lubbock's adopted pool code.
- Corner lots, where open fencing helps with sight lines near the street.
- Dust that doesn't pile up. Blowing dirt passes through pickets instead of drifting against a solid face.
True wrought iron is rare today. Most ornamental fences are welded steel with a powder-coat or painted finish, which is stronger and less expensive. We'll explain the options at your estimate.

Choosing an Iron or Steel Fence
Height
Four feet is the usual height for front yards and pool barriers. Five and six feet suit side yards and back perimeters. Lubbock exempts fences up to 7 ft from a building permit, and taller decorative fences or fences with masonry columns get a permit and, when needed, engineered footing details.
Steel gauge and picket spacing
Heavier rails and pickets resist bending from mowers, kids and big dogs. For pools, pickets have to be close enough together that a small child can't squeeze through. For small dogs, we can add extra pickets along the bottom.
Finish
Black is the most popular because it disappears against a lawn or a brick wall. A good powder coat holds up to the strong sun and blowing grit far longer than a quick paint job, and touch-ups are easy if hail chips it.
Gates and openers
Walk gates, double drive gates and rolling gates can all be built to match. Drive gates can be prepared for an automatic opener.

Iron Pool Fences in Lubbock
Lubbock adopted the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code. Residential pools need a city permit when they're deeper than 24 inches, have a circulation system or aren't drained daily, and the barrier has to pass inspection along with the pool. An ornamental steel fence makes that straightforward:
- At least 4 ft tall on the outside, with picket spacing a small child can't pass through.
- Self-closing, self-latching gates with the latch mounted high.
- No easy footholds. Horizontal rails are arranged so the fence can't be used as a ladder.
- Coordinated timing. We work with your pool builder so the fence is ready for the final inspection.
Gates That Close Every Time
The gate is the part of a pool fence that fails inspection most often. On every ornamental pool gate we install:
- Self-closing hinges pull the gate shut from any open position.
- Self-latching hardware catches reliably and sits out of a young child's reach.
- Tension adjusted for wind. Our gusts can slam a light gate or hold it open, so we set closer tension and add a gate stop.
We also repair existing pool gates that no longer close and latch on their own.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is wrought iron the same as ornamental steel?
Not quite. True wrought iron is hand-worked and rare. Most fences sold as 'wrought iron' today are welded steel with a protective finish, which is strong, durable and costs less.
Will an iron fence rust in Lubbock?
Our dry climate is kind to steel. A powder-coated or well-painted finish protects it, and scratches or hail chips should be touched up so rust can't get started.
Is iron a good choice for a pool fence?
Yes. It's see-through, rigid and simple to build to code with self-closing, self-latching gates. See the pool fence guide.
Will an iron fence keep my dog in?
Most medium and large dogs, yes. For small dogs we add extra pickets along the bottom or choose closer spacing.
Do I need a permit for an iron front fence in Lubbock?
Not a building permit if it's 7 ft or under. Fencing near a street corner must stay out of the visibility triangle above 3 ft, and HOAs may set their own front-yard rules. See the permit guide.
Can you add an automatic gate opener?
We can build drive gates ready for an opener and coordinate with an electrician for power.
