Why Cedar on Steel Posts Is the Lubbock Standard

A wood fence fails from the ground up. The post sits in soil that stays damp under the concrete, termites find it (Lubbock's code rates termite pressure moderate to heavy), and one hard spring gust finishes the job. Swap the wood post for galvanized steel and that weak point disappears.

  • Posts that don't rot or snap. Round or square galvanized posts set in concrete hold the line through wind that topples wood-post fences.
  • Cedar where you see it. Western red or white cedar pickets resist decay naturally and weather to a soft silver if you leave them unstained.
  • Easy repairs later. If hail or a stray branch breaks a few pickets, they come off and new ones go on. The frame stays put.
  • Neighbor-friendly. Steel posts can be wrapped or hidden behind the pickets so both sides look finished.

Choosing Your Cedar Fence

Height

Six feet is the standard backyard privacy height. Lubbock's building code exempts fences up to 7 ft from a building permit, so a 6 ft fence on a typical lot goes in without one. If you want something taller along a busy alley or a two-story neighbor, we file the permit. Near street corners, fencing over 3 ft has to stay out of the visibility triangle, and we lay out the fence around it.

Picket grade

Cedar comes in several grades. Select or premium pickets have fewer knots and less splitting; standard grade costs less and looks more rustic. In Lubbock's dry climate, thicker pickets resist cupping and cracking better than thin ones. We bring samples so you can see the difference.

Post style

Galvanized round posts are the most common and most affordable. Square steel posts give a cleaner look on the street side. Either way, they're set deep in concrete, well below the city's 12-inch frost line.

Finishing touches

A top cap and trim board shed water off the picket ends and make a fence look custom. Kickboards along the bottom keep pickets out of the dirt and help stop dogs from digging out. Stain can go on once the new cedar dries.

The process

How We Build a Cedar Fence

Here's what goes into a fence meant to last through Lubbock springs.

Measure and lay out

We roll the line, check your survey and the alley, and sketch posts, gates and corners on your written quote.

Rules check

We confirm city, town or HOA requirements and file a permit if your fence height or location needs one.

Utility locates

Lines are marked through Texas811 at least two working days before we dig.

Steel posts in concrete

Posts are set plumb in concrete footings, with heavier steel at gates, ends and corners.

Rails, pickets and cleanup

Rails and pickets go on with exterior-rated fasteners, gates are hung and the job site is swept clean.

Caring for Cedar in a Dry, Dusty Climate

  • Let it dry, then seal. New cedar can take stain within weeks. A penetrating oil stain slows graying and splitting under the High Plains sun.
  • Re-stain every few years. South- and west-facing sides take the most sun and dry out first.
  • Keep sprinklers off the pickets. Daily spray leaves mineral spots and speeds up rot at the bottom.
  • Clear the drifts. Blowing dirt and tumbleweeds pile up along fences after a dust storm. Clearing them keeps moisture off the bottom boards.
  • Check gates in spring. A quick look at hinges and latches before the windy season saves a sagging gate.

Have an old wood-post fence that's leaning? We also do repairs and replacements.

Alley Fences and Gates

On most older Lubbock blocks the back fence faces an alley, and that's where the trash truck, utility crews and your neighbors come and go. A few details make an alley fence work for years:

  • A gate sized for carts. City carts need about 3 feet of clearance to be emptied, so we size and place the alley gate so you can roll carts or reach the dumpster without a struggle.
  • Room around poles. We set the line clear of utility poles and guy wires so crews can still get to them.
  • Kickboards and a cap. Alleys collect blowing dirt, so a pressure-treated kickboard keeps cedar off the ground.
  • Your side of the line. We work from your survey so the fence stays on your property.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a cedar fence last in Lubbock?

On steel posts, the frame can outlast several sets of pickets. Cedar pickets commonly last well over a decade with occasional staining. The posts, not the pickets, are usually what ends the life of a wood-post fence.

Are steel posts worth the extra cost?

In Lubbock, yes. They don't rot or attract termites and they hold up far better in high wind, which means fewer leaning sections and repair calls.

Do I need a permit for a 6 ft wood fence in Lubbock?

Not a building permit. The city exempts fences up to 7 ft. Corner-lot visibility rules and HOA rules can still apply. See the permit guide.

Board-on-board or side-by-side?

Side-by-side costs less and works well for long runs. Board-on-board costs more but stays fully private when cedar shrinks, which it does in our dry air.

Can I stain my new fence right away?

Give new cedar a few weeks to dry out. If water beads up and sits on the surface, wait a little longer. When it soaks in, it's ready.

Will hail ruin a cedar fence?

Large hail can dent or split pickets, but damage tends to blend into wood grain, and broken pickets are cheap to replace individually.

Can you build an 8 ft privacy fence?

Yes. Anything over 7 ft needs a City of Lubbock building permit, which we file, and taller fences get heavier posts to handle the extra wind load.
