Choosing the Right Fence for a Lubbock Lot
Most Lubbock homes are brick, sit on flat lots and back up to an alley, so the back fence is the one everyone sees: neighbors, the trash truck and anyone driving the alley. Here's how the common choices sort out:
- Cedar privacy is the hometown standard. It's affordable, blocks dust and sightlines, and when it's built on steel posts it shrugs off wind that snaps wood posts.
- Wrought iron and ornamental steel suits front yards, pools and corner lots where you want security without a solid wall.
- Vinyl skips the staining and holds its color, though panels need solid reinforcement to handle our gusts.
- Chain link and pipe fence cover big yards, dog runs and acreage at the lowest cost per foot.
Plenty of Lubbock homes mix them: cedar along the alley and side lines, iron across the front. Still torn? Read wood vs. vinyl in Lubbock or scan the chart below.

What Happens at Your Free Estimate
An estimate from us is a visit to your property, not a guess over the phone. Plan on about 30 to 45 minutes. While we're there we:
- Roll the fence line with a measuring wheel, marking corners, gates and every spot where the ground dips or a tree root crowds the line.
- Look at the alley side. Where the trash dumpster or carts sit, where utility poles and guy wires stand, and how wide your alley gate needs to be.
- Check your survey and plat so the new fence sits on your side of the line and clear of easements.
- Ask about HOA or town rules if you live in a planned neighborhood or one of the towns around Lubbock.
- Show samples of cedar grades, steel post options, iron pickets and vinyl colors.
You get a written quote with a layout sketch. It spells out tear-out, gates and cleanup, so comparing bids is easy.

What Pushes a Lubbock Fence Quote Up or Down
Two houses on the same block can get quotes that are hundreds of dollars apart. The usual reasons:
- Footage. Fences are priced by the linear foot. A corner lot with two street sides or a deep lot that runs to the alley simply takes more fence.
- Post type. Galvanized steel posts cost a little more than treated wood up front and save you from the leaning-post repairs that wood posts usually need after a few windy springs.
- Height and style. Eight-foot privacy, board-on-board, a top cap or a trim board all add material. A 4 ft iron front fence costs less per foot than a tall iron perimeter.
- Gates. A walk gate is a small add. A wide alley drive gate or a double gate for a trailer takes heavier posts and hardware.
- Tear-out. Pulling an old fence, breaking out its concrete and hauling it off is itemized on your quote. Industry guides put removal around $10–$20 per foot.
- The ground. Slopes near a playa or canyon edge, roots and tight side yards take more labor.
HomeGuide puts a 200 ft fence at roughly $4,000–$12,000 depending on material. Your free estimate turns all of this into one written number. The Lubbock cost guide has worked examples.
Built for Wind, Dust and Hail
Lubbock ranks as the 10th-windiest city in the country, with winds averaging 12.4 mph, and the city's building code designs structures for 115 mph winds. The October 2011 haboob pushed gusts to 75 mph and dropped visibility to near zero across town. A solid privacy fence catches all of that like a sail, so how it's anchored matters more than anything else:
- Steel posts. Galvanized steel posts don't rot at the ground line and don't snap in a gust. Termite pressure here is rated moderate to heavy, which is one more reason to keep wood out of the dirt.
- Deep concrete footings. Every post goes well below Lubbock's 12-inch frost line in concrete sized for the fence height.
- Stronger gates and corners. End, corner and gate posts carry the most load, so they get heavier steel.
- Open styles where it makes sense. Iron and chain link let wind and blowing dust pass through instead of piling up.
Hail is the other spring hazard. In May 2020, baseball-size hail hit south-central Lubbock. If a storm damages your fence, we handle fence repair and give you a written estimate for your insurance claim.
Permits, HOAs and Alleys: We Sort Out the Rules
City of Lubbock
Inside city limits, Lubbock's building code exempts fences up to 7 ft tall from a building permit. That covers most residential privacy fences, but the zoning rules still apply. At street corners, anything over 3 ft has to stay out of the visibility triangle, which runs 25 ft back along each property line from the corner. Taller fences, masonry walls and retaining walls over 4 ft need a permit, and we file it when your project calls for one. The details are in our Lubbock fence permit guide.
HOAs and planned neighborhoods
Newer neighborhoods in south and west Lubbock and in Wolfforth often have an HOA or architectural committee. Wolfforth notes that some neighborhoods require architectural review before the city issues a construction permit, and Ransom Canyon has its own Building Review Committee. We put together the drawing, material specs and color samples your committee wants to see.
Alleys and property lines
Most older Lubbock blocks have alleys where the trash truck picks up, and city carts need 3 feet of clearance from obstacles to be emptied. We set alley fences on your side of the line, leave room around utility poles and plan gate swings so dumpsters and carts stay reachable.
Outside the city
Wolfforth, Shallowater, Idalou, Slaton and Ransom Canyon each have their own permit rules, and unincorporated Lubbock County doesn't issue building permits at all. We confirm which applies to your address before we dig.
Pool Fences Built to Lubbock's Code
Lubbock adopted the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, and a residential pool needs a city permit when it's more than 24 inches deep, has a circulation system or isn't drained daily. The barrier around it has to be at least 4 feet tall with no gaps a small child could squeeze through, and its gates have to close and latch on their own.
- Ornamental steel or iron is the most common pool fence we build: see-through, rigid and simple to bring up to code.
- Vinyl or cedar works when you want privacy around the pool, built so the outside can't be climbed.
- Every pool gate gets self-closing hinges and a self-latching latch mounted high, out of a child's reach.
We coordinate with your pool builder so the barrier is ready for final inspection. The full rules are in our Lubbock pool fence guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a new fence cost in Lubbock?
Most residential fences here run about $10–$30 per foot for chain link, $22–$45 for cedar privacy on steel posts, $30–$60 for vinyl and $30–$85 for wrought iron or ornamental steel. A typical backyard often lands in the low-to-mid thousands. We'll give you an exact written price at a free estimate. See the cost guide.
Do I need a permit for a fence in Lubbock?
Usually not for a standard backyard fence. Lubbock's building code exempts fences up to 7 ft tall from a building permit. Taller fences, masonry walls and retaining walls over 4 ft do need one, and zoning rules like the corner visibility triangle apply either way. Details are in our permit guide.
Why do you recommend steel posts for wood fences?
Wood posts rot at the ground line and snap in high wind, and Lubbock gets plenty of both wind and termites. Galvanized steel posts set in concrete keep a cedar fence straight far longer, and you still get the look of wood on both sides.
How tall can my fence be?
Six feet is the usual backyard privacy height. A fence up to 7 ft needs no city building permit; anything taller does, and we file it when you want the extra height. Near a street corner, fencing over 3 ft must stay out of the visibility triangle. Many HOAs set their own height limits too.
How long does fence installation take?
Most backyard fences take one to three days on site. Concrete needs time to set before panels go on, and wind or rain can push a day. Measuring, HOA approval and materials usually take longer than the build itself.
Will a privacy fence survive a Lubbock dust storm?
A well-built one should. Steel posts, deep footings and heavier corner and gate posts are what keep a solid fence standing in 60 to 75 mph gusts. Poorly set wood posts are the usual reason fences go down.
Can you match my neighbor's side of a shared fence?
Yes. We can build a good-neighbor style that looks finished on both sides, or match an existing fence's height and stain. We recommend talking with your neighbor before replacing a shared fence.
What fence is best along an alley?
Six-foot cedar privacy on steel posts is the most common alley fence in Lubbock. Plan a gate wide enough for carts, and keep it clear of the dumpster and utility poles.
Do you build pool fences?
Yes. We build pool barriers that meet Lubbock's adopted pool code, with self-closing, self-latching gates, and we coordinate with your pool builder for inspection. See the pool fence guide.
Does homeowners insurance pay for wind or hail damage to a fence?
Many policies cover fences as 'other structures,' subject to your deductible. Take photos before anything is moved and call your insurer. We provide a written repair or replacement estimate for your claim.
Is the estimate really free?
Yes. The on-site visit and written quote cost nothing, and there's no obligation.
Which areas do you serve?
All of Lubbock, including Tech Terrace, Overton, LakeRidge, Vintage Township and Kelsey Park, plus Wolfforth, Shallowater, Idalou, Slaton, Ransom Canyon, Buffalo Springs and the Lubbock-Cooper area. See all service areas.
