Fencing a home in Tech Terrace

Tech Terrace blocks are classic old Lubbock: brick homes on modest lots, mature shade trees and an alley behind nearly every house. That alley is where the back fence lives, and in this neighborhood a lot of those fences are wood-post cedar that has been patched through more springs than anyone remembers. When a post rots at the ground here, the whole run tends to lean into the alley after the next windy week.

Most of our Tech Terrace work is replacement: pulling a tired alley fence and rebuilding it as cedar privacy on galvanized steel posts, with a gate wide enough to roll carts to the truck. Big trees add a wrinkle. Roots crowd the old post line, so we shift posts a few inches where needed rather than cutting major roots, and we keep pickets off the ground with a kickboard so leaf litter and blown dirt don't rot the bottoms.

Plenty of homes here also house Texas Tech students or hospital staff, so landlords call us for sturdy, low-upkeep fences and quick repairs between leases. Up front, owners often choose a short iron fence that suits the older brick and lets the yard show.

Wind, sun and old cedar

Lubbock averages about 18 inches of rain a year, so old Tech Terrace fences tend to dry out, shrink and crack more than they rot above ground. The trouble is at the base, where wood posts sit in damp soil under the concrete. Replacing posts with steel and adding a cap to shed water off the picket ends gives a new fence a much longer run.

Fence permits in Tech Terrace

Tech Terrace is inside Lubbock city limits, so the City of Lubbock's rules apply. Fences up to 7 ft are exempt from a building permit under the city code, while taller fences and retaining walls over 4 ft need one from Building Safety (806-775-2087).
